This file contains the complete text of the 2nd edition of the novel written in 1846 by Charlotte Bronte. It deals with the adventures of a spirited young orphan named Jane Eyre. Her early years are spent as the rejected ward of her uncle's wife; later, she is sent away to a spartan existence at Lowood Boarding School. At age eighteen she accepts a job as governess to the young ward of Edward Rochester at mysterious Thornfield mansion. "It is in vain to say human beings ought to be satisfied with tranquillity; they must have action; and they will make it if they cannot find it."
